Good to know: Help for sunburn

The warm summer days invite you to sunbathe, whether it is on the beach, at an open-air swimming pool or sitting together in the evening. If you have not applied any sunscreen beforehand, you will have sunburn the following day. Our tips will help you with sunburn and ensure that your sunburnt skin heals more quickly!

What you should do to combat sunburn!

As soon as you notice that your skin is turning red and you can feel the sunburn, you should place a cold, moist compress on the burnt skin. You can also wrap ice cubes in a hand towel and place it on the affected area. The cooling process will draw heat from your skin and alleviate any skin redness. Do not put your skin under any further stress and look for a shady spot for the rest of the day. Take frequent sips from a water bottle so your body also receives sufficient fluid. Apply a light cream that contains healing ingredients.

How long does the burning feeling of sunburn last?

You have spent too long in the sun, now you’re feeling the uncomfortable effects in the form of sunburn. The most common question after this is: How long will it last? How can I get rid of sunburn as quickly as possible? Sunburn and reddened skin not only look unsightly – sunburn can also imply long-term damage. First, you need to distinguish whether the sunburn is mild or severe in nature.

> Mild sunburn: Mild sunburn is characterised by redness to the skin; however, it is only painful if you apply pressure to the reddened area. If the sunburn is only painful when you touch the skin layer, then it will take your skin a week to regenerate from the sunburn.

> Severe sunburn: Unlike mild sunburn, you will feel severe sunburn without any external influences on the reddened skin. In extreme cases, the burns will case blisters to form on the surface of the skin – if this happens, you should seek urgent medical help to discuss what to do next to facilitate optimum skin regeneration. Severe sunburn can last up to 6 weeks.

Our tips for when you already have sunburn!

1) Look for a shady spot: Now it has happened – you have got sunburnt. Don’t wait any longer – you should look for a shady spot to protect yourself from the sun. If you notice that the sunburn is on your back or chest after sunbathing, then you should put on a t-shirt to protect your skin from exposure to any further sunlight. 2) Take a cold shower! Your skin is overheated, reddened and hurts! Counteract this with an ice-cold shower. In this way, you will draw out the painful heat from your skin! 3) Apply cream to your skin regularly: After you have soothed your skin and it has cooled down, the next step is to apply a generous mount of cream. Use a moisturising cream. After-sun lotion works can work wonders on your irritated, reddened skin. 4) Drink a lot of fluid! Sunburn implies an increased need for fluid. Drink sips of water, cold tea and diluted fruit juice regularly from a bottle. Drink, drink, drink!

After applying skincare, it is time for after-sun lotion!

Household products that help to soothe sunburn!

> Yoghurt and quark: You can take these two foods straight from the fridge. Apply quark or yoghurt to the sunburnt areas like a mask – the cooling effect will be immediately noticeable. However, please ensure that you remove the mask from your skin in good time before it dries.

> Aloe Vera: In the last few years, the Aloe Vera plant has become a common sight in all households. Due to its moisturising effects, it works wonders against the nasty redness on the skin. All you need to do is cut off a piece of the plant and apply the gel-like fluid inside to the reddened area.

> Coconut oil: Another household product that supports the regeneration of the skin with its ingredients. The nutrients have an anti-inflammatory, cooling effect on the skin.

Sunburn on the scalp

If it is already too late, the following tips may be helpful:

> Oil treatment: Skincare products for the hair such as coconut and almond oil are suitable in this case. Ideally, you should leave the oil to work into your skin overnight and wash it off in the morning with a mild, paraben-free shampoo.

> After-sun spray for the head: An after-sun product cools the skin and moisturises it like it does on the rest of the body.

> Scalp peelings and blow-drying the hair should be avoided in this case.

> Use a soft, natural brush to comb your hair.

What are the symptoms of sunburn on the scalp?

> Reddened scalp

> Swollen areas on the skin

> Pain when you comb your hair

>Headaches

> Circulatory problems, nausea and dizziness

One of the most important tips is: Stay hydrated! Take frequent sips from a water bottle as often as you can to keep your water levels high! This will make it easier for your body to regenerate.
